Key terms of GearStorm
--------------------------

Apollyon - Assigned name for a Earth like Exoplanet.  The Setting for GearStorm. (Technical note: Apollyon orbits a G-Type star similar to Sol and Tau-Ceti and is thought to be within 20 LY of Earth)

Phage - An engineered nano-virus that infects humans, transforming them into aggressive,zombie-like monsters.

Vanguard -  First Colonization Ship leaving Earth orbit in 2185.  Initially commissioned by the ICA.  The trip of the Vanguard takes over 1400 years.  It is the ship last to arrive. Trailing some more advanced settlements by centuries. Vanguard is driven by a 2nd Gen Nuclear Pulse Drive

Exomarine - Soldiers of the Vanguard.  Bio-engineered and cybernetically enhanced.  Their primary goal is to establish, maintain and protect colonies on Apollyon.

The Factions
-------------------

International Colonization Alliance (ICA) -    A cooperative of government and private agencies founded in 2129 with the original intent of exploration.

Earth Defense Initiative (EDI) - Circa 2350 Power on Earth is consolidated into a one world government.  The EDI launched several colonization attempts and created large military settlements.  Some of these colonies still remain but overall the EDI has splintered into local tribes and large sections of these settlements are in ruin.

Martian Science Foundation (MSF) - Circa 2420  mostly scientific expeditions.  Small colonies were established.  Some of which are still in operation.

Sol-Terra Expedition (STE)- Not much is known about this expedition. Settlements date back to somewhere around the 27th century.  And was the first known expedition to arrive on Apollyon.  No known survivors of this expedition remain on Apollyon. But advanced technology remains in ruins scattered throughout the map.

The Corporations
--------------------
Several military contractors contributed Intellectual property and resources to the ICA.  Assets by these manufacturers can be fabricated by players.

Hale & Masterson - Specializes in high end slug throwers, Gauss & Rail,  the Style of these will be wood and gun-metal.

Archon Industries - Laser/Beam Weapons mostly - Technical, Military contractors (Think Aliens Pulse Rifle)

Rygaard Arms - Explosive projectile weapons - Bulky, heavy metal

Trigon Dynamics - Quantum Rift and other Exotic technologies - Sleek curves and shrouds, backswept capacitors and other District-9 style artistry

Nakitomi Tactical - Lightweight gauss & other tech.  Common with NPCs (Killing Floor MedGun) This gun will be the common equipment for NPCs.  Cheap & Lightweight.

Xi -  Xi is not a corporation, as much as a runaway Malware Coin-Miner.  It is a sentient software that infects all computing networks on Apollyon.  Xi is extremely territorial and governs all software and construction licenses.  It trades manufacturing licenses for XiCoins aka Research Points.

Locations
--------------------
Wake Station - One of the few remaining EDI settlements.  It's a walled city built around an original colony facility with a mix of military and commercial habitats.  Facilities have fallen into disrepair.  Parks have been repurposed for agricultural areas.  The is an open air market as well as abandoned military and industrial areas.

Northpoint Ruins -  Northpoint is a fallen EDI settlement.  Fairly large but spread out.  It's overrun with wildlife and zombies.  Highlights include an abandoned spaceport, industrial districts and military housing.

New Tharsis- A grand, lost MSF colony attempt.  An abandoned colony city.  Access to advanced materials but poorly defended and was eventually over run.

Endora Colony - A remaining but stressed MSF settlement built atop an abandoned EDI settlement.  Ruins of an original military outpost are overshadowed by overground structures.  Endorans build off the ground and connect facilities with a network of bridges to help defend against the phage threat.

Immortaltown -  A remainin EDI MadMax style barbarian citadel built into the side and top of the mountain.  Massive doors lead to a motorpool inside the mountain.  The top is used for agriculture and command facilities.  Small satellite facilities surround Immortaltown.

Skywatch - A small MSF communications facility.  Mostly untouched by the phage.  Contains merchants and researchers and is likely the most stable and advanced location on Apollyon.

Swamptown -  Made up of the survivors of New Tharsis.  Swamptown is a small bayou settlement.

Beastiary
------------------

Apollyfawn (Deer) - Apollyon's most abundant herbivore.  It is a common food source for most carnivores and omnivores.

Rhinolope -  A more aggressive and capable herbivore.   Typically not combative unless threatened.

Scorpax - An athropod like creature that is highly aggressive and territorial.  A good source of protein.

Raptrax - A highly armored raptor-like predator.  They travel in packs and are aggressive when hungry.

Tyrax - Apollyon's alpha predator.  A Tyrannosaurs like creature that is heavily armored and lethal.

Sandwyrm - Another massive predator that lives under the sands in the desert.  This creature can also spray a mist of acid to incapacitate its prey.

The Factions
---------------
In Detail...

-------------------

International Colonization Alliance (ICA) -   Departed 2185 AD : Arrived 3585 AD

A cooperative of government and private agencies originally founded in 2129 with the original intent of exploration.  The ICA resources were repurposed as an escape mission when it was believed that Earth would be overrun by the Phage.

ICA represents a diverse group of scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs.  The program is well organized but was motivated by desperation.

---

Earth Defense Initiative (EDI) - Departed 2350 AD : Arrived 2990 AD

After the Phage outbreak on Earth,  science and social programs suffered serious setbacks. And out of this rose a consolidated militaristic government.

The EDI launched several colonization attempts and created large military settlements.  EDI tends to be industrial and militaristic.  The primary motivation for colonization was expansion and biotech advancement.

Some of these colonies still remain but overall the EDI has splintered into local tribes and large sections of these settlements are in ruin. They are technically the first known to arrive.   Some tribes, like the Immortals have become brutish and savage.  Likely a product of the hostile environment.  Others like Wake Station have managed to retain a semblance of organization and civility.

---

Martian Science Foundation (MSF) - Departed 2420 AD : Arrived 3250 AD

The MSF was spared most of the tribulations of Earth.  They exhibit a strong focus on science and procedure. They are well organized and adaptive and their culture focuses on logic and pragmatism.

They launched mostly scientific expeditions.  Small colonies were established.  Some of which are still in operation.

---
Sol-Terra Expedition (STE)- Departed ~2800 AD : Arrived ???

Not much is known about this expedition. Settlements date back to somewhere around the 27th century.  And was the first known expedition to arrive on Apollyon.  No known survivors of this expedition remain on Apollyon. But advanced technology remains in ruins scattered throughout the map.

World building questions for ya.

1. Looks like the Phage took at least 165 years (2185 to 2350) to destroy Earth
2. Did all factions use the ummanned probe/printer setup?
3. What's the history of Mars in all this?

Oh, and who made the Phage? I was writing a short story for you and just made someone vaguely fanatical sounding up.

What FTL modes are available btw? It looks like it took ICA 1400 years to get to Apollyon. Is it barely-faster-than-light? Lol.

Also, who ostensibly are we playing when we get into the game right now?

Seriously fun questions!  Keep in mind the story is prealpha too. So subject to change. We're debating on whether or not the phage originates on Earth or is indigenous to Apollyon. Thoughts?

If it came from Earth, it wasn't invented by any of the factions we know today.  I'm hesitant to finger a current regime but imagine as viral gene editing becomes commoditized it could be any of the following...
1) Terrorist group
2) Small Dictatorial Regime
3) Rogue mad scientist
4) Run away American super soldier program (Fallout FEV?)

Also,  there is no FTL.  Atleast for all but the Sol-Terrans. We're being a little obtuse with the location but it's based on Tau Ceti.  The closest Sol type star.  It's only about 12 LY away.

The ICA Vanguard used a Nuclear pulse drive. It was filled with bio-printer pods.

The EDI Sent a fleet, driven by Antimatter reactions.  Basically a more advanced version of the ICA drive. They did have printer tech, but the ships were also crewed by military personnel that received longevity gene therapy and rotated through cryosleep. It's believe that a phage carrier (a small percentage of the population is immune to most strains) aboard one of these ships is what led to the spread to Apollyon.

The MSF uses Railgun Massdrivers to launch an array of unmanned printers.  No large ships.  They had solar-sail parachutes to slow their approach.  This was a low budget science mission.  It actually took them longer than the EDI to get there.

The STE,  they used a Tardis or something XD.  Actually, it's believed they used some sort of direct tachyonic teleportation.  But that's just a guess based on the lack of evidence of a landing craft.

Oh,  and the Phage never actually wiped out Earth.  It was expected to but once 99.99% of the food source had been wiped out, the infected starved and died out.

Mars was an established but fledgling colony when the Phage hit Earth.  It was spared due to the already necessarily tightly controlled environment and the long lead time. Two colony ships en-route from Earth to Mars were destroyed by the Martian government when they refused to heed the quarantine.  This lead to an interstellar incident.  Earth supplies were cut off for Mars and if it weren't for the wealth of asteroid mining Mars would've perished.

Earth was repopulated by the preppers, the military and political vault dwellers, and many space dwellers on asteroids and space stations.  And with cloning technology the population rebounded. But due to the catastrophe, the character of Earth was changed forever.  Much more of a  Spartan culture emerged.  This is what seeded the EDI. The Phage was never really wiped out on Earth either but for the most part it's contained.

So,  you're playing as a Exomarine for International Colonization Alliance (ICA).  Corporatized Space UN.  None of what's above is known when you arrive.  In your mind,  you're the last hope for humanity trying to colonize a pristine planet.  You were the first to leave, and the last to arrive.  And it looks like humanity has already made a mess of the place.

What do you think?  Is the grass too tall XD

Looks good to me. A full timeline would be nice to have. You already have the beginnings of one. If I get a chance, I'll see about putting one together.

There's a lot of juicy details to be had in who was doing what and when. Especially as concerns the order of colonization and such.

Example: EDI landed 260 years ahead of everyone else. (Ie. ~14 generations ahead of) With space-aged tech at their disposal, that's likely enough time to create a functioning nation, have a few wars, and then some other big historical events all before MSF lands.

Exactly right.  Did you read the map thread?

The EDI essentially fell apart.  Not really all phage related.  Local differences too.  There were 4 major settlements to begin with.  There are really only two left.  Immortaltown and Wake Station.  Although there are smaller outposts all over the map.

There was also a historical Phage outbreak.  The EDI was nearly immune to the phage when they landed.  About 120 yrs in,  the Phage mutated in a way their engineered immune systems couldn't compensate for.  About 1/2 of the EDI population was susceptible.  It started in Northpoint and is known as "The Fall of Northpoint."  The location never recovered. This was also the catalyst for the separatist movement in Immortaltown (Originally Jonestown).

It's buried in there.  But could always use help fleshing it out.
